Pamela Gough ...Visual Artist

About the work ...

Pamela Gough's  contemporary narrative paintings are embedded with stories and symbolism  inspired by the patterns in the landscape, character buildings and researching historical maps  which reveal the spirit of a place, especially her home town, Brisbane.  Her paintings search for authenticity and scratch at the surface  to reveal connections to the past and direction on the everyday map of life...
" From the whimsical houses dancing on the ridges to the strong texture of corrugated roofs, fence palings  and ancient symbols, Pam paints a narrative on canvas. " Bill Metcalf - Brisbane History Group.

About the Artist

Born in Brisbane, Pam has a Diploma in Visual Arts and  studied a variety of art forms in the 80's including partial Associate Diploma in Creative Arts at NBCAE with  Australian Artist William Robinson.  In the 90's Pam built a successful art business "Final Touch - decorative art, painting commissions, house portraits and teaching art.  She returned to study Visual Arts and Computer Graphics in 2005 but  this renewed her love of painting on canvas.

Pamela wrote and illustrated her book "My Brisbane" in 2006, a project whilst studying for her Diploma.   When  researching and illustrating the book she discovered the joys of "being a tourist in her own town" and she realised how little she knew about it.  From that turning point, her art blossomed with a series "My Brisbane" a Community project and series Mitchie turns 150, in 2007. That energy and creativity, combining history and landscape expanded through her "Qld 150" series in 2009  with "Impact on Moreton Bay" unveiling Pam's work as a Tattersalls landscape Art Prize finalist.  Pam continues to explore more deeply, the spirit of the places she visits. The "My Town" 2011 series in the aftermath of the Brisbane Floods  celebrated community  and "Coast to Home" 2012 explored Queenslanders' love affair with the Beach. Being a tourist in her own country is inspiring and endlessly rewarding.and "Take me There" Solo Exhibition in 2013 was a result. 2014 "In my Backyard" explored the local terrain in light on the demolition of many beautiful character houses in her neighbourhood. 2015 Pam explored her own family history and the Celtic and medieval influences that are strongly connected and interwoven into her work in 'THE WAY BACK HOME" solo exhibition whilst finding the connections to her Celtic ancestry in a year  highlighted by the immigration of many to these Australian shores.    Pam paints commissions which provide an opportunity to travel others' journeys and experience shared stories.

Pamela grew up influenced by Australian colonial artists McCubbin and  Roberts  but was also drawn to the  stylised and highly decorative work of the celtic illuminated manuscripts and Aboriginal art and their story telling nature .  An advocate for celebrating and preserving Brisbane's character housing placenames and  their stories, this combines to create a collage on canvas.  Pam says "Brisbane  Development seems too young and immature  to appreciate it's heritage yet, let alone it's original inhabitants. This is reflected in my paintings because I feel I have a duty to paint about buildings and a culture which is disappearing before my eyes".
Pamela  relaunched the reprint of her "My Brisbane" Book at her "In My Backyard " solo Exhibition  June, 2014.
